Digitisation of your cassettes

Entrust your precious memories to an expert. I convert your old magnetic tapes into high-quality digital files (MP4) on a USB stick or via the Cloud.

Our digitisation services: professional quality for your memories

Your old video cassettes contain precious moments, but time is playing against them. Year after year, magnetic tape suffers from the effects of humidity and degrades. At Nostalgia Transfer, we bring your memories back to life by transferring them to modern and durable digital formats.

Whether your memories are stored on a living room VCR cassette or a standard camcorder tape, our studio supports the most common formats. Each type of tape benefits from a playback method strictly adapted to its technical specifications for optimal capture.

After the transfer process, your memories are converted into the universal MP4 format (H.264). To offer you the best possible rendering, I first digitise your cassettes in a lossless format (without loss of quality) to preserve all original details and colours.

Each analogue video stream is then deinterlaced by me to eliminate the so-called ‘comb effect’ (the horizontal lines during movements) and ensure a sharp and smooth image on modern screens. Finally, I optimise the encoding for the perfect balance between maximum quality and file size, making it easy for you to view the videos on a Smart TV, computer, or smartphone.

Every video cassette contains a unique piece of history. That is why I choose not to compress your images directly during capture. I first digitise your tapes in a lossless format (without quality loss) to maximally preserve the original details and colours before your final file is created.

During this process, I monitor the stability of the image. Thanks to the use of a signal corrector (Line TBC) and a deinterlacing treatment, I reduce jitters and eliminate horizontal lines. The result is a stable, sharp, and pleasant image to look at on your modern screens.
Cheap methods (USB video grabbers) Nostalgia Transfer Quality
❌ Unstable & interlaced image
Jitters, frame jumps, and horizontal lines (comb effect) on Smart TVs.
✔ Smooth & stable image
Real-time correction via Line TBC and professional deinterlacing.
❌ Destructive compression
Aggressive compression during capture that destroys details and dulls the original colours.
✔ Lossless Master Recording
Raw digitisation without quality loss via VirtualDub & I-O DATA capture cards.
❌ Quality-reducing conversion (DV)
Digital MiniDV/D8 cassettes are played back via obsolete analogue cables.
✔ Native Digital Stream
Pure bit-for-bit extraction via FireWire connection. No pixel loss.
❌ Worn second-hand equipment
Use of worn consumer VCRs that risk damaging or scratching your tapes.
✔ Premium Equipment
Exclusive playback on professional camcorders and decks.
4. Repair & Options Treatment Offered
Mould cleaning
For cassettes stored in a humid environment
Manual decontamination
Tape repair
Broken or wrinkled magnetic tape
Micro-surgery (Splicing)
Basic editing included
Removal of blank screens and video noise
Cleaning of start and end
A damaged cassette or a tape with blank segments does not mean your memories are lost. Before each digitisation, I visually inspect the physical condition of your tapes and optimise the final result to offer you optimal viewing comfort.

Whether it is cleaning a thin layer of white mould caused by humidity or repairing an accidentally broken magnetic tape, I intervene manually and with the utmost care. Furthermore, basic editing is included with every transfer: I remove blank screens, frame jumps at the beginning and end, and video noise (snow) free of charge.

My priority is to handle your family archives with the greatest respect. By combining these essential repairs with a digital cleaning of the tracks, I ensure that your final files are clean, sharp, and ready to be shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find the answers to the most frequently asked questions about my digitisation service.

Which video cassette formats do you support?

I digitize the following formats: VHS, VHS-C, Video 8, Hi8, Digital 8, MiniDV, MiniHDV, and MiniDVD.

It all depends on the storage media you choose! For delivery on a USB flash drive or via a download link, I provide files in MPEG-4 (H.264), the ideal universal format for computers, TVs, and smartphones. If you choose a DVD, your videos will be burned in MPEG-2 format.
To ensure the highest quality, we first digitize your tapes uncompressed (lossless), which requires about 10 GB of data per hour. We then compress the video into a high-quality MP4 file (H.264 codec). The final file size is approximately 2 to 3 GB per hour. The exact size depends on several factors, such as the amount of movement and the analog noise on the original tape. We recommend keeping this in mind when choosing the storage capacity of your USB drive or hard drive.
I always digitize your video tapes in their original, native resolution. For the European PAL standard (such as VHS, Video8, and MiniDV), this is exactly 720 x 576 pixels. By maintaining this native resolution, the footage remains authentic and sharp, without being artificially stretched or distorted.
Yes, but prior cleaning is mandatory. For hygienic reasons and to avoid contaminating my machines, I cannot digitize a moldy cassette without treating it first. An additional fee of €15 per cassette is charged for this professional cleaning. Please note: although cleaning removes the mold, it does not guarantee that the underlying magnetic tape has remained undamaged.
You don’t have to worry about a thing! I automatically determine the required capacity of the USB flash drive once your cassettes are digitized, and it will be invoiced afterward. As a guideline, one hour of video represents about 2 to 3 GB of data. However, this is not an exact science: the final file size highly depends on the image quality and the condition of your original tape.
No, as a cybersecurity measure, I cannot connect external media to my computers. The only exception applies to brand-new USB flash drives or hard drives that are still in their original, sealed packaging. In all other cases, I provide a secure storage medium myself.
